Learn how to use eSIM on Samsung, including how to install, activate, use, and transfer eSIM.

eSIM is a new SIM technology that is becoming increasingly popular among Samsung Galaxy users. With its ultra-compact size, eSIM offers greater convenience and better security compared to physical SIM cards. This article provides a detailed guide on how to use eSIM on Samsung, from installation and activation to transferring eSIMs and using international travel eSIMs on Samsung devices.

I. What is eSIM on Samsung?

eSIM on Samsung is a digital SIM that allows you to use mobile services without requiring a physical SIM card (Mini SIM, Micro SIM, Nano SIM, etc.).

eSIM technology provides many practical benefits for Galaxy users, especially convenience and enhanced security. However, eSIM is currently only available on Galaxy devices from the S20 series onward. In addition, transferring eSIMs between devices can sometimes be more complicated than transferring physical SIM cards.

II. Requirements to Activate eSIM on Samsung

To use eSIM on Samsung Galaxy devices, you must meet the following 2 requirements:

  • A Galaxy phone that supports eSIM: only Galaxy S20 series and newer.
  • A carrier that supports eSIM: In Vietnam, Viettel, MobiFone, and Vinaphone currently support eSIM services.

Note: You should update your phone to the latest software version before installing and activating eSIM for the best experience. Go to Settings > Software Update > Download and Install and follow the on-screen instructions.

III. What to Prepare Before Installing eSIM on Samsung

Before installing eSIM on your Samsung Galaxy device, prepare the following:

  • An eSIM-compatible phone. If using a travel eSIM, your phone must be carrier-unlocked.
  • A stable WiFi connection.
  • eSIM information from your carrier (QR code or manual activation details sent via email).

IV. How to Install eSIM on Samsung

There are 2 ways to add an eSIM to your Galaxy phone:

  • Scan a QR code
  • Enter information manually

Among these methods, scanning the QR code is the easiest and most convenient option. Manual setup is only necessary if the QR code cannot be scanned.

Steps to Install eSIM on Samsung

  1. Open Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager
  2. Select Add Mobile Plan > Add Using QR Code
  3. Display the QR code on another device or print it out
  4. Point your phone camera at the QR code and scan it
  5. The eSIM will be downloaded and activated on your Samsung device

Note: On some Galaxy models, manual activation may not appear unless the phone fails to scan the QR code. When scanning fails, the Activation Code option will appear so you can enter the details manually.

How Long Does eSIM Installation Take?

Installing eSIM on Samsung Galaxy devices is quick and usually takes only 3–5 minutes.

V. How to Activate an International Travel eSIM on Samsung

When using eSIM on Samsung, you need to distinguish between a regular eSIM and an international travel eSIM.

A regular eSIM works similarly to a physical SIM card. After completing the installation steps above, you only need to enable the eSIM to use it.

For an international travel eSIM, you need to complete a few additional steps after arriving in the destination country.

Steps to Activate a Travel eSIM

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager
  2. Select the travel eSIM you want to use
  3. Toggle it on and confirm Turn On This Line
  4. Enable Data Roaming
  5. Return to Connections > Mobile Data
  6. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data
  7. Disable Allow Cellular Data Switching

What to Do if the eSIM Cannot Access the Internet?

If you still cannot access the Internet after activating the travel eSIM:

  • Restart your phone
  • If it still does not work, manually configure the APN:
    • Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
    • Enter the APN details provided by your carrier or eSIM provider

VI. How to Use 2 eSIMs Simultaneously on Samsung

Currently, Samsung only supports using 2 eSIMs at the same time on newer devices such as the Galaxy S23 series. Older models only allow one active eSIM at a time. However, you can still store multiple eSIMs on your Samsung phone and switch between them when needed.

If you want to use two phone numbers simultaneously on Samsung, the most practical solution is to use one eSIM and one physical SIM card.

VII. How to Delete eSIM on Samsung

To remove an eSIM from Samsung Galaxy:

  1. Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Card Manager
  2. Select the eSIM you want to remove
  3. Turn off the eSIM if it is active
  4. Tap Remove and confirm

Note: Be careful before deleting an eSIM. Most international travel eSIMs can only be installed once, so you should only remove them when they expire or run out of data.

VIII. How to Convert a SIM to eSIM on Samsung

You can convert SIM cards to eSIMs with Viettel, MobiFone, and Vinaphone.

For Vinaphone, the only way to convert to eSIM is by visiting a Vinaphone service center directly. You must bring:

  • Your original ID/passport
